It is used primarily in biochemical and pharmacological research to study the role of nitric oxide in neural signaling, vascular tone regulation, immune function, and cellular signaling pathways. The compound demonstrates strong selectivity for nNOS over other isoforms such as endothelial (eNOS) and inducible (iNOS) nitric oxide synthases, with reported Ki values around 120 nM and >2500-fold selectivity for nNOS versus eNOS.
